The John (with American, havarti and provolone cheeses) with a side of onion rings at Cary’s Abbey Road Grill, a double cheese burger at the lunch counter at Sutton’s Drug Store in downtown Chapel Hill, the so-rare-they’re-blue bison burger at Ted’s Montana Grill in Durham, the open-faced Royale with whiskey cheddar at Poole’s Downtown Diner in Raleigh, whatever the Farmer’s Market Special is at the OnlyBurger truck in Durham, the half-pounder with Gruyere at the Raleigh Times, the old-school cheeseburger with Kraft singles and yellow mustard at Wimpy’s Grill in Durham, the “hamburger steak” at Raleigh’s famous Char-Grill, the goat burger with duck fat fries at Saxapahaw General Store in Alamance County.

Wimpy’s is an institution! I love the burgeoning foodie movement(thanks for blowing that open, NYT) but it’s nice to have such a yummy, friendly reminder of Durham’s grungey benevolence.
I absolutely love the Raleigh Times burger! Best when medium/ medium rare with fries and homemade pickles.
I’ve tried about half and hear rave things about the other half; seems like a pretty good list.
One thing I’ll say, though, is that as much as I love the farmer’s market specials, OnlyBurger’s bacon & blue with red onion marmalade has to be my favorite burger I’ve tried of theirs. NOM.
My vote is for Sutton’s, but I’m intrigued by the John at Abbey Road (three kinds of cheese!?). I would have thought the Ringo came with the onion rings…
Nice choices. Chance for a feature on best veggie burgers?
