About

Triangle Eats is me, Emily Matchar, a North Carolina-bred freelance writer and total food freak. That’s me, at left, wearing my sombrero at Suchi in Cary. Don’t even ask.

Raised by Yankee parents in Durham and Chapel Hill, I grew up around tons of food, loving ham biscuits and corned beef in equal measure. As an adult, I spend an inordinate amount of time eating (and thinking about eating), scurrying from Carrboro to Raleigh to Cary to Pittsboro and back in search of the best BBQ, tamales, nabeyaki udon, biscuits, masala dosas and more.

Lucky for me, my job aids and abets my habit. A former reporter for the News & Observer, I’m now a full-time food and travel writer. I’ve written about Mississippi Delta tamales for Gourmet, do-it-yourself BBQ for Outside and artisanal cheese for Forbes Life, to name a few of my favorite stories. I also write guidebooks for the Lonely Planet series, specializing in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Traveling for work and for pleasure, I’ve found local food blogs some of the most helpful resources for deciding where to eat. When I lived in Sydney, Grab Your Fork and Not Quite Nigella were my go-to sources for restaurant info and fun foodie daytrips. Mexico Cooks was my food Bible while researching Michoacán for Lonely Planet Mexico. When my boyfriend and I went to Paris, we followed the eating itinerary in Orangette almost bite-for-bite.

I wanted to write something similar for my own home turf, the Triangle. With all the eating I do, I might as well put my local food knowledge to work, right? I hope this online guide will help newcomers and visitors learn their way around area restaurants as well as get longtime residents even more exited about the awesome local food scene. Everything here is totally subjective, and if off-color remarks offend you, well, maybe you should be reading Zagat ;) . Please add your own favorites in the comments section!
